Rosh Hashana 2017

The start of every year is important, and this year we come together for Family Weekend during Rosh Hashanah (sundown Wednesday 9/20 to sundown on Friday 9/22).

Landmark College’s Family Weekend is unique – as it is meant to provide not only a host of activities on campus that families can enjoy together, but an opportunity for students and families to have an early check-in and assessment of how the semester is going, and 3-4 weeks into the semester has proven to be the best time to address any obstacles and make any adjustments.

When we were creating the schedule for this academic year, we saw that the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fell directly in the traditional timeframe of Family Weekend. While we schedule the Landmark calendar with holidays in mind, we found, from experience, that scheduling Family Weekend before or after the holidays (at the end of our second or fifth week of classes) would be too early or too late to provide an effective program. We would like to note that we have looked forward until 2021 and do not anticipate this occurring again in the near future.

We hope that anyone celebrating the holidays will be able to join us on campus in some way. To help you plan, we have a few options for you to consider:

  • Families are welcome to participate in services though Congregation Shir Heharim in Brattleboro, Congregation Ahavas Achim in Keene, NH, or Temple Israel in Greenfield, MA. They are aware of our schedule and are happy to have families join them for any of the services (please note that services are in different locations each day).
  • We will be holding a Shabbat Service on Friday night in the dining hall.
  • Advising meetings are scheduled on Friday and Saturday of Family Weekend. Families who are not able to travel because of the holiday are welcome to call and schedule a conference time with students & advisors to have a “virtual check-in” either before or after Family Weekend.
  • Many of the programs that occur on Friday of Family Weekend are also available during Family Orientation earlier in the semester. All materials will also be available on request.

If you have any other questions, comments or suggestions on how we may help you and other families manage the schedules of the holiday and Family weekend, please feel free to contact the Student Affairs office at (802) 387-6714 or [email protected].
