School of Liberal Studies & the Arts

Culture and community, shared and personal history, memories of the past combined with the imagination to look ahead to the future. That’s what makes us human.

At The School of Liberal Studies and Fine and Performing Arts, students experience those aspects of humanity and the self that create individual identity and expression, as well as social systems and cultural differences. 

The Liberal Studies Department offers courses in nine disciplines that explore the fundamental questions about what it means to be human. Those are:

  • Literature
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Religion
  • Sociology

We offer both introductory and upper-division courses that allow students to experience a wide range of offerings, from Ancient and Medieval Western culture to Environmental Literature to Introduction to Political Science to Diversity Psychology.

Several courses in Liberal Studies include a significant experiential component including Cultural Anthropology, Civic Engagement, Personal History, and of course our Study Abroad options allow students to engage in material in a variety of ways. Degrees offered:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Integrated Arts Department offers a rich variety of courses that provide students with ample opportunities for the exploration of a variety of topics both in the traditional studio arts as well as in contemporary digital media and cultural studies.

All art courses are taught by seasoned artists and musicians, effectively mentoring students in the histories and contemporary expressions of a particular medium. The Art Department believes that learning differences must be acknowledged as an integral part of the human condition, and that Universal Design principles should guide all of our pedagogic efforts.

In fine and performing arts courses, students hone their innate ability to:

  • Interpret and evaluate art from a variety of aesthetic, critical, and historical approaches
  • Understand the role of art in contemporary culture
  • Work with the fundamental components, skills, and operations of the particular medium being studied
  • Take a process-oriented approach to learning
