Tuesday, July 11: We can see Wanlockhead Clearly now the Rain has Gone

What a difference a day makes in the UK!  We experienced a respite from the rain today, which emboldened us to embark on our first long hike east along the Southern Upland Way.  Wanlockhead felt desolate, bleak, and remote 24 hours ago.  We were all wearing fleece jackets, rain coats, and long pants.  Today, the sun appeared from behind the clouds for extended periods of time.  There were more than a few “sunny spells,” as the Brits have a tendency to say.  We ventured out along the Southern Upland way, past the lead mining museum’s exhibits and beam engine, and over several Scottish stiles, which are designed to keep the sheep from roaming where they’re not wanted and the humans from wandering wherever the path takes them.  At the highest point of the trail, we had the opportunity to view a large plantation, which tied in with many of the themes of the course.  Students are scheduled to participate in a work session tonight for a paper due tomorrow…  All seem to have recovered from their Jet Lag….
