Thursday – A visit to the Quaker School and the Monteverde Reserve

After the morning communications class with Professor Burns, we all got on the bus and headed to the Quaker School in Monteverde. The Friends School or Escuela de Los Amigos was founded over 60 years ago by Quakers who left the United States in search of a country and community that supported their peaceful principles. Rick Julisson, Head of School, gathered us into the meeting house and talked with us about the 65 year history of the Quakers in Costa Rica and their school. He talked with us about the philosophy the school is based on. In response to questions from the Landmark students, he discussed the processes that underpin the running of The Monteverde Friends School. It was most informative for a group of students studying group leadership and group problem solving. After our meeeting we took a brief tour of the campus. A stop for ice-cream at the “cheese factory” prepared us for a leisurely walk through the cloud forest.

Our trip to the Monteverde Reserve allowed us to learn about the animal and plant life there, and to take in some beautiful views of waterfalls and old growth forest. We finished up the day with a stop at the hummingbird gallery for a close up look at some beautiful hummingbirds.
