First day on the Isle of Skye

Monday, July 8

While the rest of the group settled into to their accommodation and oriented themselves to the village of Carbost, Isle of Skye, Mariana and I embarked on our own adventure north through the highlands of Scotland to the port of Mallaig where we were scheduled to board the last ferry bound for the Isle of Skye. One can understand why this particular rail journey through the Scottish highlands is thought to be one of the most scenic in the world. It is the stretch of the journey between Fort William and Mallaig that is particularly breathtaking. With the majestic Loch Shiel as the backdrop for this part of the trip and the spectacular Glenfinnan viaduct as one of its most notable landmarks, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe at the sheer beauty of Scotland’s natural landscape.
