Ellen’s Outing Report

Students traveled to the Anglo Saxon Church, All Hallow's Barking and the British Museum.

Ellen Chornoboy's Outing Report: Visit to the British Museum 

By visiting both All Hallows and The British Museum, the main focus was to read and learn about Anglo-Saxons in the 6th to 7th century. Our main mission when visiting the British museum was to see the Sutton Hoo helmet. There was a replica and a reconstruction of it as well. Besides the helmet, there was an illustration of a boat burial that was discovered in 1939. There were not that many artifacts but there was a lot of information about the Anglo-Saxon period in the 600s.

In the middle picture is the Sutton Hoo helmet, which was mentioned in the above paragraph above. On the right is a lyre replica. A Lyre is a string instrument. The one below is made out of wood and was used for reciting stories and accompanying along poems. Lastly on the left, is a drinking horn. Drinking horns come in pairs and are decorated with the tips being carved like bird heads while at the other end human or beast faces interlacing.
