Supporting Neurodiverse Students

Jan Coplan, director of career connections, making her presentation at the Jan Coplan, Director of Career Connections and Solvegi Shmulsky, Psychology Professor and Director of the Center for Neurodiversity were invited to The Washington Center (TWC) in D.C. to present “Supporting Our Neurodiverse Students” on Thursday, November 14th.  TWC is an organization offering immersive internships to hundreds of college juniors and seniors every year.

Coplan (pictured right) and Shmulsky delivered two trainings, one to site supervisors and one to student advisors and TWC staff.

The first session defined neurodiversity and discussed how it appears in student profiles. Participants explored common manifestations of neurodivergence and educational strategies to increase inclusion. This part was from is from a faculty perspective.

The purpose of the 2nd session, Neurodiversity Goes to Work, was to explore neurodiversity in the workplace and develop takeaway strategies for supporting neurodivergent interns. This part was from a career counseling perspective.
