“Lucy Speaks” comes to Landmark College, Feb. 8
Landmark College will present “Lucy Speaks: Rights, Witness, and Voice” with Shanta Lee Gander on Thursday, February 8 in the Greenhoe Theater. The event begins at 6:30 pm and is free and open to the public.
“Lucy Speaks” was developed as part of the “Peoples, Places, and the History of Words in Brattleboro, Vermont” project. During the hour-long program, Gander will engage audience members in a conversation about rights, witness, and voice through the lens of Lucy Terry Prince, who is considered to be the first African-American poet and resided in Guilford, Vermont after being freed from slavery. The presentation also includes Gander performing Prince’s only surviving poem, “Bars Fight.”
Gander is a writer and artist living in southern Vermont. She is the former president of the Arts Council of Windham County and currently designs their “Nourishing the Inner Artist” forums. Previous projects include the “Perfect Imperfection” photography exhibit, done in Collaboration with Liz Lavorgna, and VOICES, a mixed media show created with her husband, Mac Gander. Her writing has been featured on the Ms. Magazine blog, Vermont Views, and WKVT’s “Green Mountain Mornings” radio program. A Connecticut native, Gander holds an MBA from the University of Hartford and a Bachelor’s degree in Women, Gender, and Sexuality from Trinity College.
