Therapy Dogs

Our campus buzzes with the wagging tails of beloved therapy dogs.

We’re proud to offer the comfort of campus therapy dogs!

These furry companions are here to help boost our students’ mood and reduce anxiety, while creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for socializing.

Owned and handled by Landmark College staff members, each dog has a unique personality and niche enabling students to engage in a variety of activities with the dogs, from puppy snuggles to walks around campus to games like tug and fetch.

Frequently Asked Questions

The research is clear. Pet therapy (also known as Animal-Assisted Therapy) is recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health as a supportive experience that is beneficial for physical and mental health, and can help with many of the issues and stressors that college students face.

Multiple studies have shown the emotional, physiological and cognitive benefits of interactions with dogs — such as boosted energy, increased positive emotions or lowered risk for memory loss.

Researchers have found that interaction with dogs - even if they don't belong to a student - can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, ease depression, stimulate memory and problem-solving kills, and allow students to feel more at ease and open to social behavior.

We have three levels of Therapy Dogs at Landmark College:

  • Therapy Dogs in Training are typically new to the program or younger dogs and are still learning the ropes of being on campus and regularly interacting with students.
  • Landmark College Therapy Dogs have passed the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen assessment and are established in Landmark's program.
  • Certified Therapy Dogs have been certified by an independent therapy dog organization and have often trained for work in nursing homes, hospitals, and other therapeutic environments.

The best way to spend time with our therapy dogs is to attend a therapy dog program, drop by during therapy dog office hours, or schedule an appointment with the dog's handler. Dog's schedules vary from semester to semester.
