Program Overview

Primary goal: To explore the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces that shape educational issues, and to learn about neurodiversity in education in the Dutch context.

  • Study in the Hague, a picturesque city on the North Sea which is the seat of the Dutch government and the home of multiple international justice organizations such as the International Criminal Court.
  • Gain firsthand experience of Dutch culture via an in-depth exploration of education in The Netherlands.
  • Visit local schools in order to compare cultural differences in educational access and opportunity (including for students who learn differently).

Netherlands Study Abroad Program Details & FAQs

In this course, students will explore the historical, cultural, political, and economic forces that shape educational issues, and how these relate to teaching practices and educational culture surrounding Neurodiversity in the Netherlands. The emphasis will be on the national educational system and innovation in the area of Neurodiversity of the study abroad host country.

  • Live in a hostel in central the Hague, in rooms shared with one to three other Landmark students, with easy access to public transportation, restaurants, and shops.
  • Daily travel may include walking, trains, trams, buses, taxis
  • Enjoy day excursions such as historic/cultural sites, visits to Amsterdam and other cities, and North Sea beaches

This program will have a group round-trip flight from Logan airport in Boston to Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, then students will travel by train to the Hague.

  • At least one program leader will accompany the group on each flight
  • Landmark will offer optional shuttle service between campus and the airport

Special Considerations

Consider the following to determine if this course is the right fit for you.

Free time/Independence: Moderate to High

During free time, program leaders may offer optional activities.Students who want to explore independently will have plenty of opportunities to do so.

Physical Demands: Moderate

Some activities may require a significant amount of walking, and some stamina is required for full-day excursions to locations outside the Hague. .

Transitions: Low

The program stays in the same housing for the full three weeks. The schedule includes daily travel and a several full-day excursions, guided by program directors.

Stimuli: Moderate

Program housing is in central city in the Hague. The Hague is the third-largest city in the Netherlands, though it’s a relatively small city compared to other large urban centers. Program activities include day excursions and interaction with local teachers, students, and others in educational and social settings.

Language Difficulty: LOW

Although Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, nearly all Dutch people are fluent in English, so students should have no trouble communicating.

The prerequisites for this course are EDU1011 and WRT1012, and good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or above) OR permission of the department chair, Katie Roquemore.

Estimated additional costs:

Student spending can vary depending on the individual. Additional costs include:

  • Most meals—housing includes shared kitchen facilities for students wishing to prepare some of their own meals, and restaurants for all budgets are available locally
  • Free time activities
  • Cell phone costs: students are expected to have a data plan through their own provider or an eSIM card.
  • Laundry
  • Souvenirs, gifts, etc.
  • Travel to reach the departure airport
  • Additional baggage fees beyond the first checked bag

Landmark College’s “Global Engagement” Scholarship offers a scholarship of up to 50% of the program fee. Scholarships are need-based and in general there are 1 – 2 scholarships available per program.

The scholarship application is now closed and all funds for Summer 2025 have been disbursed. The application deadline was Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
