Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts Production

The Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts Production engages students in a thoughtful exploration of visual storytelling and the digital arts. Through hands-on instruction in video, sound, and media production, they learn to create time-based media such as short films, TV segments, podcasts, sound art, and emerging digital works.

Small classes led by faculty who understand neurodiversity are key to what sets this program apart. Faculty in Media Arts Production are committed to helping students develop technical and artistic skills in an accepting environment. They are pros in their field and knowledgeable about strengths and challenges related to ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and learning disabilities.   

With small classes, students can expect to get to know their professors well. They also have daily access to software and equipment in our media labs.

Instruction in Media Arts Production is informed by these universal design principles:

  • Variation in delivering content, including demonstrations, videos, online content, discussion, and class lecture
  • Variation in assessments, including projects, critiques, and creative activities
  • Second chances when mistakes are made
  • Opportunities for self-discovery and self-advocacy  

Students are encouraged to engage in activities that are enriching, meaningful and fun. Opportunities that may be of interest to Media Arts Production majors include Voices TV and online media, WLMC Radio, gallery exhibits and film screenings, and opportunities to work with the Marketing Communication Department (MarCom) to create content. Media Arts Production majors may also team-up with student groups, such as the Centers for Diversity and Inclusion, Student Government Association (SGA), and the Esports Team, to create content by and for students. 

Students in the Media Arts Production major may pursue entry-level internships in any area of interest, including:

  • Arts
  • Digital production

  • Film

  • Media communication
  • TV and/or radio broadcasting
  • Web design

Internships are highly individualized based on skills, interests, and available opportunities. Our Career Connections Office offers one-on-one support to students who choose to pursue an internship. 

Media Arts Production majors develop technical and conceptual skills to work in roles that entail production of media for commercial or artistic purposed, including

  • Film production
  • TV and radio stations
  • Marketing and content creation 

Graduates will also be prepared to pursue master’s-level education in related fields.

To earn the B.A. in Media Arts Production degree, students must complete 121 credits:

  • 39 credits of major required courses:
    • 30 major required credits
    • 9 major required credits that also count toward general education
  • 31 additional credits to complete the general education requirements
  • 51 credits of general electives (18 must be at the 3000/4000 level)

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts Production degree, students will be able to

  • Demonstrate proficiency with industry-standard software and hardware for video editing, sound design, and digital media creation.
  • Solve common technical challenges in media production, demonstrating adaptability and troubleshooting skills in response to equipment, software, or situational issues.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team-based production environment, planning and sharing technical concepts clearly and contributing to shared project goals.
  • Formulate media making objectives and select appropriate tools and creative techniques to fulfill them effectively.
  • Use knowledge of cultural context to analyze and critique media elements in their own work and that of others.
  • Create and exhibit cohesive media projects with a portfolio, reel, or other time-based artifact that exemplifies a creative vision and readiness for entry-level professional roles in media production.
