Welcome to the digital component of the Robert H. Rhodes Landmark College Archives. (The physical component of the Archives is available for visitation by appointment—please see below.)
We hope that this collection of resources will serve as an overview to the establishment and development of the first college in the country to be founded exclusively for students with dyslexia, and later, other learning differences including ADHD and autism. Not only do these pages detail the history of Landmark College (est. 1983), it also presents an overview of Windham College (1951-1978), the college for which the Landmark College campus was designed by noted architect Edward Durell Stone.
Please explore this digital introduction to Landmark College's earliest days through a variety of resources that document the history of the College, including: news clippings, photographs, and other material.
Site Content Sources
Information contained on this site has come from several different sources and is used with permission, including the following:
- Articles in Links, the Landmark College newsletter from 1991-2011
- Excerpts from Landmark College: A Short History of the First Twenty-Five Years
- Photographs from the College Archives
- Newspaper clippings from the Brattleboro Reformer and links to historic online articles
It would not have been possible to create this site without the assistance of many people who shared their memories and gave so generously of their time. Each and every person contributes his or her own vision, talents, and gifts to this community, and while this digital version of the Archives tries to show a view of the College since its founding, it could never do justice to the students, faculty, and staff that have made Landmark College what it is today.
Special thanks to founding faculty member Dan Toomey, whose eloquence is evident throughout this site in the excerpts taken from Landmark College: A Short History of the First Twenty-Five Years.
The Robert H. Rhodes Landmark College Archives, including a collection of Windham College Archives, is available for visitation by appointment with the Archives Coordinator. Please note that portions of the Archives are restricted from access.
