Solvegi Shmulsky, Dean of Liberal Studies & The Arts: Many students are interested in neurodiversity and education, and this psychology major was designed to have a lot of that content in it to capture that interest.
Tim Beck, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology: There's already been such a lot of self-reflection that a lot of our students have gone through. They come in with questions that I wouldn't expect a lot of undergraduate psychology students to come in with. And that makes for some really amazing conversations, and it makes for some really interesting projects.
Shmulsky: We have unique research opportunities at Landmark because we’re a small institution. Students can learn basically from soup-to-nuts how to generate an idea and follow it through to completion and maybe even to dissemination. They learn the skills while they're doing it.
Beck: But my favorite thing is watching those groups that get to know each other, quite well across those required courses, start supporting each other without even needing us to prompt them, and the sense of community at the end is, I think, unique.
Alex Larson ’24, B.A. Psychology Graduate: The faculty, in particular, have been really supportive whenever you really need it. What's really helped me feel supported the most is knowing that's like: Hey, I can — one, I can do this. I've learned here that I can do this. My teachers have bolstered my strength and have made me feel more secure in my learning style.
Beck: So, we've tried to tap into that that sort of natural curiosity and desire for self-reflection that students have and try to find a way to allow them to connect that with some goal that they have after college.
Shmulsky: The B.A. in Psychology is preparing students for a couple things: first and foremost, entry-level positions that require a bachelor's degree. We do a little bit of professional development in their senior year to kind of get them ready for that. Another outcome that students achieve in this program is preparation for graduate school. We've had a surprising number of students attend master's programs after finishing their B.A. in psychology. It may be one third to close to one half of the graduates have been accepted to a master's program.
Larson: Landmark made me even applying to master's programs feasible.

Larson: My next steps are a master's in social work at Columbia University. [Applause]
