Sandra Fishler, Director, Success Center: We opened our doors in August of 2021, and the types of support that we offer are executive function, academic support, and transition skill-building to and through college. The individuals that we support are neurodiverse, teens, young adults, and adults. The Success Center offers personalized coaching and social support services.
Suzie Weschler, Parent of Success Center Client: The reason I chose to have my child join the Success Center is because I think that all kids who are transitioning to college need some level of support. Then when you're talking about neurodiverse students, I would argue that every neurodiverse student can benefit from some sort of support that isn't their parents.
Sarah Firestein, Learning Specialist: When I'm meeting with clients, I always want to do my best to customize our services. I will notice if clients are going to benefit more from a discussion-based format. Some clients need a highly structured agenda, whereas some clients need a much more dynamic, interactive way in which we both discuss, have written-down agendas that they also engage in and help me build.
Fishler: In addition, the learning specialists utilize a nondirective coaching approach that is a facilitative role. It's very empathic. It's an opportunity for the learning specialist and the individual to co-design solutions to their goals.
Rebecca Reibstein, Success Center Client: I found the Success Center very helpful because I felt like people understood the things that were hard for me that I didn't know were even hard for me to begin with.
Firestein: During a coaching session, the learning specialist and the client come to collaborate on goals that relate to executive function skills and academic supports. This also takes place early in the intake process, and then we continue building and revisiting that plan throughout the weekly sessions that we meet.
Reibstein: The services were helpful to me because each individual session was tailored to what I wanted to work on. So if I had a challenge that I wanted to work on or if I didn't want to work on something one day, I could just say that, and we could change our course.
Fishler: Whether a client wants to receive services online, in person, or in a hybrid format, our learning specialists have expertise in each method.
