Landmark College Majors: B.A. in Integrated Arts

Solvegi Shmulsky, Dean of Liberal Studies & The Arts: Integrated Arts means that students are learning performing art and studio art together, and they're integrating their knowledge covering broad themes that are relevant in both areas. 

Samuel Rowlett, Professor of Art: So we try to prepare students for a variety of careers, everything from design to film and production as well as not just, you know, being a professional artist. So having a broad base of skills as well as an in-depth knowledge in particular subjects really helps them on their way. 

Cynthia Ludlam, Assistant Professor of Ceramics: I see lots of discovery, lots of invention in these classes. So the foundation classes have more of, like regimented assignments. There's still a lot of creativity that goes into them. In the upper level classes students are conducting research on artists and art movements. 

Gabby Killin ’24, Bachelor of Arts Integrated Arts Graduate: So there's stuff for painting. There's digital media, which is what I'm focused on. I've also learned how to use the camera, so I've been able to put all that into a film I am currently making for my capstone.

Sofia Masciale-Walmer, Student: I do like the way music is taught here. It's for everybody, and that's, I really appreciate that. Taking music classes here means a lot to me, that I can continue working on music without having it, like, you know, be stressful.

Rowlett: We give students multiple ways to access the content of the courses. 

Ludlam: I also think about how Universal Design intersects with creating an emotionally safe space and a brave space. 

Killin: Meeting with my professors one-on-one and them really getting to know me and how I learn as well. The professors are always willing to help out. 

Ludlam: I'm always trying to learn from my students and I think the students know that I'm eager to learn from them. 

Rowlett: There is a track record in the art world that the art world attracts thinkers, creative thinkers, people who think outside of the box. Neurodivergent thinkers do that with aplomb.
