Upper Campus Commons Work Begins

Initial construction work for the Upper Campus Commons project begins today (Monday, September 8). The idea for this project came out of a series of listening sessions with students about the improvements they would like to see on campus, and we’re excited to begin this work! This project will create an addition to Stone Hall that expands space for student activities and events, as well as an outdoor courtyard and plaza. Across all elements of the design, neuroinclusive design principles have been emphasized. 

Construction crews and heavy machinery will be present on campus throughout the week, and much of the fall and spring semesters. The first few weeks of this project will be slightly more limited as site work begins, and work will increase over time. We understand that this work can be loud and disruptive, and we appreciate the patience and support of our community as we undergo this campus transformation. 

To minimize the potential for disruption, we have worked with our construction partners to ensure that they will not begin work before 8 a.m. and will not extend beyond 6 p.m, unless there is critical work that needs to be completed. 

Changes to parking

Parking spaces between Stone Hall and Davis Hall on Perseverance Lane will be blocked off, as well as the parking spaces between the Safety Office and Bridge 1. These spaces will be utilized for the construction project until it’s completion. See site map below for reference. 

Timeline for September 8 through 12

The first steps in the process will be setting up the construction site, job trailer and construction fencing. Here is the projected timeline for this week. 

• Monday (9/08): Parking spaces mentioned above will be blocked off.
• Monday and Tuesday (09/08 and 09/09): Surveyors will be on site laying out the building and setting grade stakes for construction.
• Thursday (09/11): The job trailer is delivered and installed on Perseverance Lane near Stone Hall (see logistics map below).
• Friday (09/12): Construction fence will arrive, and the construction site will be fenced in.
