Visiting York: Another day ending with afternoon tea!
Today we took the fast train (125 mph) from London’s Kings Cross station to York, the walled city in northeast England which was founded by the ancient Romans. We recognized some of what we learned in the classroom as we walked around the city. A statue of Constantine the Great sat outside the beautiful cathedral at York Minster affirming what we learned about him in the classroom: He became a Roman Emperor in 306 AD right there in York.
Our main focus, however, was learning more about the Viking Settlement at Jorvik. We saw a spectacular simulation of Viking Village life by a series of life like dioramas. Life like mannequins were displayed in scenes of every day life. We experienced the sounds and smells of the village which Gil Borenstein described as “an odorous menagerie.”
Inside the museum we learned more from museum guides and the many exhibits.
As per usual, we ended the day with afternoon tea at the very famous Miss Betty’s Tea Room.
We met at the train station for the journey back to London.
