Trip Impressions from Student Molly Perlmutter
Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always been so inspired by nature, especially birds. I always feel so connected to them and I love to show my passion to educate and protect all species of birds. I started wildlife photography in 2022, and this hobby alone has such a positive impact on my life. I’ve made so many connections to all different types of people. Since I am a biology major, I wanted to make even more connections with people who are into biology and birds. The connections I’ve had at Landmark College have been so wonderful as I love to educate my peers with my large impact photography. A picture is always worth a thousand words.
I know I’m always out in the forests near Landmark College and bringing my camera and gear with me. It’s one of my favorite passions as I have photographed hundreds of birds near the college. You get excited when you spot a bald eagle circling above campus or those quirky blue jays causing a screaming match near Frost Hall. I love what I do best, search for all the birds throughout the town of Putney, Vermont and the New England region of the US.
I knew one day that I wanted to go to the tropics, but for me, it would have to be tough to endure since this is something I have never done. I was given an opportunity. When I found out that there is a study abroad trip to Costa Rica on biodiversity studies, I had to tell my dad to sign-up for the trip. “This trip was so built for you; you’re going to photograph so many amazing new animals.” My father was so right, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. As I took thousands of photos of all the birds and other animals, it was so hard for me to pick a favorite. It’s like I couldn’t choose but I did find one that truly fits my photography passion to the trip.
At the start of the journey, we went to a little outdoor restaurant where there was a small pond with scenery. After exploring the pond for a little bit, something caught my eye. I saw a green parrot on a branch near a dark background. When I went closer with my camera, I looked through my viewfinder and I noticed it’s not your typical Costa Rican parrot. It was a yellow-naped amazon! These parrots are a critically endangered species in the country and a rare sight to see. Walking wobbly but slowly at the same time, I took my camera and then positioned myself on the ground. (yes, it was very uncomfortable), I then took several photos of the parrot and after looking for the ones with the most quality, I have made my choice. It was one of my favorite experiences on this trip to Costa Rica and this country will always have a special place in my heart. Pura Vida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
