Touring the Globe

This post is submitted by student Ryan Linkletter

On January 8th, Dr. Adrienne Major and the class of London’s Study Abroad J-Term 2020 visited Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre located on the bank of the River Thames. On their way to the theatre the class took a small detour around St. Paul’s Cathedral to take a glance at the breathtaking view.

At the Globe Theatre the class was taken on an informational tour of Shakespeare’s Globe and the history behind its construction and activity that was facilitated inside it.

After the 45-minute tour the class was scheduled to see the play Richard III which was written by Shakespeare in the Sam Wanamaker Theatre. The class watched the 2 ½ hour play then returned to their hotel for the evening.

Some reactions from the group:

Madison Pardi: The tour of the Gloe Theatre was truly amazing. Seeing Richard III was also awesome; the best I’ve ever seen.

Riannon Robertson: There’s many ways to do Shakespeare’s plays, but in this one, the modernization of certain aspects helped the audience understand the play better and at the same time, it created meaning to different aspects like the construction light that cued the murders. It brought some levity to an already dark play.
