Purrefectly Relaxing: Visiting a Cat Café in Tokyo

[Text and photos by student Norah Gover]

About halfway through our time in Japan, a typhoon hit Tokyo, bringing heavy rain and wind. Despite that, and not wanting to wast my time in Japan, I went out to a cat café as a fun indoor activity to do as the storm raged on.

Several people gather in a stylish space featuring brass hanging spots for cats to sleep.
Cat Café Mocha featured hanging perches for the cats throughout the cafe.

Cat Café Mocha is located in the Akihabara neighborhood, and for the 3000 Yen tourist package, they offered 30 minutes of time with the cats, unlimited drinks from their vending machines and freezers, a cat treat, and a small gift of photos of their cats.

This car loved the cat-shaped popsicle, placing a paw on my hand to ensure it got a good taste of it.

The cat room was large and had ample space for the cats to run around, climb, scratch and sleep.
The café also provided manga in both Japanese and English, video games and coloring, but most ignored them in favor of playing, feed and petting the cats, myself included.

Pictures of the cafe's cats, including one from "Mao's" birthday last year.

Overall, it was an incredibly fun and calming experience, just being in the room with so many happy cats, and other people respectfully engaging with them, my only regret is not paying for more time.
