My Experience Making Connections in Nikko

By student Jacob Stefanick

My time at Nikko was more than a sightseeing trip; it was an experience in growing closer to my peers and trip mates and making new friends, strengthening connections that I can potentially deepen and enjoy in the fall. In Nikko I got to spend quality time with people who I did not talk to in my last semesters. With these new friends I got to share the enjoyment at Nikko like the delicious buffet and the pool. I was also able to deepen friendships at places like the onsen, or hot springs, a heated bath important to the Japanese. I also enjoyed a massage courtesy of the hotel which was a nice experience to share with a fellow member of the basketball team.

My time at Nikko was amazing. When participating in the Nikko-bori, a woodwork style specific to Nikko which uses a hikkaki, a special carving tool, the woodworking was very fun, relaxing, and mindful.

During my time at Nikko, I really enjoyed time spent with new friends as an eventful part of my trip to Japan. Along with time spent with friends the shrines in Nikko were carpentry marvels which were a true privilege to see and explore.
