July 23: Journey to Edinburgh, Scotland from the Isle of Skye
We embarked on a long journey from Carbost, Isle of Skye, to the Capital city of Edinburgh today. Our bus driver took us to the port of Armadale, which is located in clan MacDonald territory, on the south side of the island. From Armadale we travelled via ferry across to Mallaig on the mainland, and then we journeyed south east by train to Glasgow on the west highland railway. Widely known as one of the most scenic rail journeys in Britain, the west highland rail line travels through the remote, mountainous, west coast of Scotland. The first stretch of the trip between Mallaig and Fort William is perhaps the most picturesque. The train passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (of Harry Potter fame) and through Arisaig--offering views out to Loch Shiel and the outer Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck, and Canna. Unfortunately, our train ran into technical difficulties on the way to Glasgow, so we arrived in Glasgow later than expected and finally made it to our accommodation in the new town of Edinburgh at around 11:30 p.m.
