Hitting the ground running

Day one's task was to try to stay awake until evening...a challenging task with jet lag. But we managed, thanks in part to a beautiful spring day that helped with resetting everyone's internal clocks.
By morning, the group was reasonably awake and ready to jump into this week's theme: History of Berlin and the Nazi Rise to Power. After some time in the classroom, we were able to walk from our campus to Tempelhof Airport for a tour that highlighted the complex layers of 20th century Berlin.
Between all of this, students are learning the ins and outs of how to buy groceries/supplies, to use Google translate, and to navigate the U-Bahn. I expect they will all be plenty tired tonight.

Today's tour of the historic Tempelhof Airport gave a good sense of what was happening in Berlin before, during and after WWII. From one of the most advanced and modern airports in the world, to a Nazi plane-production center and bomb-shelter, to the site of the Berlin airdrop, students saw firsthand how a building can be primary source for historical analysis.
