Discovering Wildlife in Japan

[Text and photos by student Zina Sagoo]

My first time in Japan has been a great experience. In the first week, I saw many different types of animals, including a giant black bird called a large-billed crow. I also saw snapping tortoises. As someone who loves animals and hopes to become a veterinarian, it was exciting to observe wildlife in a different country.

Seeing these animals made me feel curious about how wildlife lives alongside people in Japan. I noticed that the parks and public spaces were very clean and well cared for, which may help support local wildlife. This experience helped me better understand the Japanese cultural value of respect for nature. In class, we have learned that nature is an important part of Japanese culture, and I could see that connection while observing these animals in their environment.

I hope someone who is not on this trip would understand that studying abroad is not only about visiting famous places. It is also about noticing everyday things, learning about local wildlife, and experiencing a new culture in ways that cannot be learned from a textbook.

Seeing these animals made my first week in Japan memorable and helped me appreciate both the natural environment and the culture around it.
