Summer Intramural Sports Foster Competition and Connection

Intramural sports at Landmark College take on a unique flavor during the summer months. As Assistant Director of Athletics Molly Lawson explains, the program is less formal than the traditional intramural model that would be seen in other college intramurals. Rather than structured leagues and competitive head-to-head matchups, Landmark’s version functions more like drop-in recreation—a space for students to connect, get active, and self-regulate through movement.

Intramurals are intended to give students a low-pressure environment to be physically active and socially engaged. “It’s a comfortable way for students to move their bodies and meet new people,” Lawson says. When asked about the target demographic, Lawson added, “It’s for students who want to be able to get in touch with others on campus. I highly recommend it for anybody who’s struggling to find themselves socially. I couldn’t recommend anything better.”

Promotion efforts are extensive, from bulletin boards and student affairs info spots to digital signage and weekly newsletters. Scheduling is also done thoughtfully, ensuring intramurals don’t conflict with other campus events.

While the sessions are casual, they’re also monitored carefully. With energy levels running high, especially during competitive games, Lawson sometimes steps in to maintain a safe and inclusive atmosphere. “We make sure things are moderated at an acceptable level,” Lawson explains. “It is true that oftentimes student athletes tend to be rowdier and more competitive, but I feel like that adds fuel to the flame of fun.”

I personally have had a great time anytime I attended these intramural events. The various activities that differ every week were always incredibly entertaining to be part of, whether it be ones I was very familiar with, like hockey, or completely new sports, like handball. It’s a good rush of energy if I’ve had a boring day. And as a fairly competitive person, this is great for me to do while also engaging in a very healthy social environment.
