Landmark College has incorporated new seminars that focus on boosting executive function skills into its short-term summer program offerings in 2025.
While developing a student’s activation and motivation has always been part of these programs, High School Summer Program Academic Director Kate Wilson says this more intentional approach was developed to meet the wants and needs of students preparing to make the transition to college.
“At this stage in their young lives, students are transitioning to becoming the executors of their own functioning, Parents have really been supporting that up until this point,” Wilson says. “This is a place for them to practice these transitional skills and get them to navigate their own way, with a lot of support from us.”
For the High School Summer Program that serves rising juniors and seniors, the Blueprint for Learning Seminar combines seminar-style classes with a twice-weekly lab. Through interactive projects and activities, students will develop a clearer understanding of how they learn, along with skills and strategies that can be applied to any learning environment.
Similarly, recent High School Graduates enrolled in the Summer College Readiness Program will take part in a series of workshops entitled, Skills to Conquer College. Each workshop demystifies a particular component of the early college experience, including non-academic challenges, and shows students how to put that knowledge into action.
“Part of your executive functioning is understanding that there are going to be obstacles for everybody,” says Wilson. ““We’re giving students a framework to think about executive function, and then we are giving them a place where they can practice those skills.”
