Landmark College Recognizes Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The following reflection on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was written by Marc Thurman '18, Director of the Centers for Diversity and Inclusion.

Today, we honor the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he was a guiding light for justice, community, and unity. As we welcome the New Year, it's vital to reflect on his profound teachings and recognize that it's our responsibility to keep his dream alive.

Dr. King envisioned a world where every individual is treated with dignity and respect, a vision that remains as relevant today as it was during his time. His message of unity inspires us to embrace our differences and work together toward a common goal. By standing in solidarity, we can create a ripple effect that extends far beyond our individual actions.

However, keeping Dr. King's dream alive is not just a passive remembrance; it demands active participation from each one of us. Consider how you can contribute to this ongoing journey by actively becoming an ally and finding time to educate yourself.

As we move forward, let's remember that coming together is just the beginning; staying united signifies progress, and working hand in hand represents true success.

To better understand Dr. King's vision and the Civil Rights Movement, I encourage you to explore the films Son of the South and Boycott, as well as the Peter Kunhardt documentary King in the Wilderness.

Together, let us honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by cultivating a world filled with love, understanding, and a commitment to justice. The dream is ours to carry forward, and it is up to us to ensure that it thrives.

“I have decided to stick to love...Hate is too great a burden to bear.” - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” —Barack Obama
