From Becky to Karen: (De-) Weaponizing White Womxnhood
October 29th | 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. | Brooks O'Brien Auditorium/Lewis Academic Building
Speaker: Landmark College Assistant Professor of Education Stefanie Argus
In the United States, the mainstream feminist movement has centered white, cisgender, heterosexual, able-bodied, and middle class womxn above all others. Beginning in the early 1900s, we'll look at examples of how white womxn have weaponized their race to bolster and codify white supremacy, both within society in general and specifically within academia. This session will include learnings from Assistant Professor of Education Stefanie Argus' research, in which she employs critical whiteness studies to address the topics of racism and anti-racism.
Argus is an Assistant Professor of Education at Landmark College and holds a PhD in education from University of Rhode Island. Her work has been published in outlets such as the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching and the Handbook of Research on Social Justice and Equity in Education.
