Honors Program Students Make Blankets for Local Organizations

Students in the Landmark College Honors Program spent part of today’s lunch meeting assembling no-sew blankets as a group service project.

No-sew blankets have been growing in popularity among crafters because they require very little to make other than fabric, a ruler, and a pair of scissors. Instead of needle and thread, the blankets are bound together by strips cut along the edges.

With guidance from Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Karrie Kalich and Executive Assistant for Academic Affairs Justine Gaskamp, students set a goal of making 20-30 blankets that will be donated to animal shelters or other local organizations.

“Being in the Honors Program isn’t just about grades. It’s about being a well-rounded person and making the campus a better place,” said student Owain Lucas, who joined the Honors Program last fall. Owain’s work as a campus ambassador for the Admissions office and station manager for WLMC are other ways he fulfills the leadership component of the program.

Student Aimee Nelson says she applied for the Honors Program because of the community service element. Back in her hometown of Grafton, Massachusetts, she is an active volunteer for the Community Harvest Project, and she says she really looks forward to doing more of these group service activities.

“It shows that everyone is dedicated to supporting the community and supporting each other,” said Aimee.
