Equestrian Students and Alumnae Attend, Medal in Green Mountain Horse Association Event
Three student members of the Landmark College Equestrian Club traveled to Woodstock, Vt. on Saturday, May 2 to participate in the Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) May Schooling and Jumper Show. Alumnae Katherine Wagenbach '98 – owner of Ridgeview Stables in Putney – led the trip and provided two horses for students to ride.
Student Logan Lipshultz won second place in two jumping events riding Wagenbach's horse Maggie. Students Olivia Arnell and Charlotte Graham also attended the event and informally rode Wagenbach's Icelandic horse, Rena.
Lipshultz shared that after spending much of childhood riding horses competitively, including some bad experiences, they were unsure if they wanted to continue when they arrived at Landmark. But Lipshultz credits Wagenbach's mentorship and instruction as crucial to rediscovering their passion for horseback riding.
"I remember walking the 1.6 miles from Davis Hall to Katherine's farm for the first time, unsure of what to expect," said Lipshultz. "I didn’t know anything besides that she had four horses and an outdoor ring," Lipshultz continued, but "those four horses and outdoor ring turned into my happy place from then until now."
Wagenbach, too, reflected upon Lipshultz's growth over the course of the academic year, saying that Logan "came to me with a deep love and commitment to horses, but also with significant fears from prior riding experiences." But, Wagenbach continued, "we worked through many of these issues in a supportive and structured environment, and Logan's incredible progress and accomplishments are evident in Logan's (performance) at the GMHA event."
Beyond Logan's success at the GMHA competition, Wagenbach also highlighted another recent achievement of Logan's – riding Maggie bareback and bridle-less in their last lesson. This represented "a major undertaking and display of trust with her equine partner," according to Wagenbach.
