Mental Health Therapist- Substance Misuse & Addictions Specialist

Overview:

Landmark College Counseling Services is dedicated to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of our neurodiverse student community. As part of the Student Affairs division, we provide individual counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation services that empower students to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Our counselors work to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where students can explore their strengths, build resilience, and achieve their goals. With a collaborative, creative, and student-centered approach, our department plays a vital role in helping students who learn differently navigate the challenges and opportunities of college life.

Primary Function:

The Mental Health Therapist - Substance Misuse & Addictions Specialist provides comprehensive mental health counseling services to Landmark College students with a particular emphasis on prevention, assessment, intervention, and treatment related to substance misuse and addictive behaviors.

This position supports students through individual and group counseling, crisis assessment and response, psychoeducation, consultation, and wellness programming. The therapist serves as a campus resource in the areas of alcohol and other drug (AOD) misuse, behavioral and process addictions, and technology-related addictions, including concerns related to gaming, social media, internet use, and electronics dependency.

The position works collaboratively with Health Services, Student Affairs, Residential Life, Community Standards, Campus Safety, academic advisors, and other campus partners to promote student well-being, persistence, safety, and healthy development in a neurodiversity-informed college environment.

Specific Responsibilities:

Direct Clinical Services

  • Conduct psychosocial, mental health, substance misuse, and behavioral addiction assessments of students referred by staff, faculty, or self-referral.
  • Provide individual and group counseling services that are responsive to the developmental, emotional, psychological, and neurodiverse needs of students.
  • Assess and provide treatment planning and support for students experiencing concerns related to:
    • Alcohol and other drug misuse
    • Substance dependency and recovery support
    • Behavioral/process addictions
    • Gaming and internet overuse
    • Electronics and technology-related dependency
    • Compulsive behaviors impacting academic, social, or emotional functioning
  • Conduct substance use and behavioral addiction assessments as part of the College's student conduct and intervention processes, when appropriate.
  • Function as an on-call counselor on a rotating basis, consulting with Residential Life staff, Campus Safety, local crisis services, hospitals, and administrators in situations that may require emergency intervention, hospitalization, or coordinated support.
  • Provide crisis assessment, intervention, stabilization, safety planning, and referral services for students experiencing acute emotional or psychological distress.
  • Refer students to professionals outside the College when appropriate.
  • Provide service in accordance with legal and ethical mandates.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and ethically compliant clinical documentation using institutional electronic record systems.

Prevention, Outreach, and Consultation

  • Develop and facilitate prevention programming, workshops, and outreach initiatives related to neurodiversity, mental health, substance misuse, harm reduction, electronic dependency, stress management, and self-regulation
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, student leaders, families, and campus departments regarding student mental health, substance misuse, behavioral addictions, risk assessment, and supportive intervention strategies.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs and campus partners to support students involved in conduct, behavioral intervention, or wellness-related concerns connected to substance use or addictive behaviors.
  • Participate in student orientation programs, family programming, wellness initiatives, and campus-wide educational efforts designed to promote student well-being and success.

Serve as a campus resource on issues related to addictions, recovery support, digital wellness, and student mental health.

Administrative, Collaborative, and Professional Development

  • Participate in the development and review of Counseling Services policies, procedures, protocols, and wellness initiatives.
  • Attend regular staff meetings, residential life meetings, and other meetings for the coordination of student care or to support community wellbeing.
  • Remain current with developments in counseling and mental health, particularly as they relate to college students, neurodivergence, and campus life.
  • Develop and maintain computer skills necessary for record keeping and communication.
  • Some evening, weekend, and on-call responsibilities are required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, or other behavioral health discipline required;
  • Current Vermont License (LICSW, LADC, LCMHC, LMFT), ability to transfer out-of-state licensure, or active progress towards licensure preferred. Non-licensed individuals must be registered as a Non-Licensed & Non-Certified Psychotherapist with the State of Vermont Office of Professional Regulation (OPR).
  • Experience providing primarily individual psychotherapy, outreach, programming, mental health consultation, crisis intervention, substance abuse treatment, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ideal candidates will have some background related to education and demonstrate some prior experience working with neurodivergent individuals who have diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and Dyslexia.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • The ability to responsibly handle confidential/sensitive information.
  • Technological competency for the use of electronic record keeping and documentation.
  • Demonstrated awareness and ability to provide culturally competent mental health services.

Working Conditions:

The work of a Landmark College Mental Health Therapist is primarily performed in a private office setting within the Counseling Services department, located in the Student Affairs division. The role involves frequent in-person interactions with students, faculty, staff, and families, as well as occasional virtual or telehealth sessions. The position requires the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, student-centered environment while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Counselors regularly participate in meetings, training, and campus events in various locations across campus. Some evening and weekend work, including on-call responsibilities, is required and shared among the counseling team.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands are generally minimal and typical of an office environment, including extended periods of sitting, working at a computer, and communicating via phone, video, or in person. The role may occasionally require moving between buildings, setting up materials for outreach events, or adjusting work to accommodate students' accessibility needs. Reasonable accommodation will be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Compensation:

At Landmark College, our compensation philosophy reflects our institutional values, our commitment to fairness and equity, and our role as a transformative educational community. The compensation for the above position is $47,600 - $63,500.
