Landmark College Creates Four Academic Schools

In Fall 2015, Landmark College is adopting a four-school divisional structure created to maximize collaboration and efficiency in Academic Affairs. Three of the schools are fully operational with existing academic departments led by a dean of the College. The fourth school, expected to house online learning and graduate studies, is under development. The schools are designed to provide greater community for faculty who work in similar areas of academia, thereby increasing opportunities for team work and innovation. On May 13, 2015, faculty and administrators met over breakfast for the first time in their new divisions to prepare for the upcoming year. Students taking courses will be unaffected by the change.

“This restructuring will concentrate expertise and experience in three principal areas, enabling us to better lead and manage growing academic programs,” said College President Dr. Peter Eden. Smaller divisions replace the prior model of 13 diverse departments led by one dean, a model that Eden said was “increasingly untenable, especially as we have added the complexity of new programs.” Since 2012, Landmark College has added two associate of science programs and three bachelor-level programs to its offerings.

The initiative to restructure Academic Affairs goes back at least three years and has included the participation of many individuals and groups, including the Faculty Senate and Department Chairs. In July 2014, incoming Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Monika Bissell was charged with making the shift to a three-school structure.

“President Eden had the vision and confidence to move the College ahead in this fashion,” said Bissell. “His support, coupled with the work of the faculty, made for a light load! We were able to finalize the restructure within a few months of my arrival.”

Bissell acknowledged and thanked faculty and staff for their work. She said, “With an eye toward new programs and our potential as a baccalaureate institution, several faculty put numerous hours into this initiative. I continue to be in awe of the dedication and expertise of the faculty and staff at Landmark College.”
