How the Library Can Assist Faculty & Staff

Students aren't the only Landmark College community members who can benefit from library research instruction and assistance. A key component of the Library's mission is not only to provide direct services and instruction to students, but also to support our colleagues' professional development and scholarship.

  • Librarians enjoy assisting our colleagues with their literature searches, copyright questions, and information resource needs.
  • We provide support for faculty and staff professional development and scholarship with our online and physical collections as well as with guidance in using those collections optimally.
  • We assist committees and administrators in informing new initiatives with literarature reviews of best practices in higher education and in the disciplines.

  • Don't worry about choosing the right Library staff member to ask—any of us are happy to connect you to that person.

    We will assist with:

    • Literature searches
    • Finding potential course readings for your courses
    • Creating email alerts for new journal issues
    • Creating email alerts for keyword search results
    • Guidance with the beginning of the publishing process
    • Advanced and basic database searching techniques
    • Purchasing items for your professional development & scholarship

  • Is there a resource that you would like the Library to own? 

    If you haven't already, please see if we already own the item. (Many of your colleagues have been surprised to learn we already own the item they requested.) 

    • Search the Library Catalog for books, DVDs, audiobooks, and music CDs you might wish to recommend.
    • Search Full Text Finder for the title of a journal, magazine, or newspaper.

  • Email your department liaison librarian to schedule a Library Research Session in the Library, or in your classroom. (Not sure who your department's liaison is? Then email both librarians, Mary Jane MacGuire and Jamie Harvey, and they'll sort it out for you.)

    Your department liaison librarian will tailor the content of the information literacy class to your students' particular needs. 

    The Information Literacy Sessions:

    • Are specific to an assignment and the students' research topics
    • Are interactive and require student participation
    • Provide an overview of some of the sources that work best for the students' projects
    • Provide time for every student to get individual attention if needed
    • Provide ample time for each student to leave with at least one source (preferably more) that starts them in their research.

    The librarian will often create a Library Course Guide, listing the best sources for the students' research. 

    Librarians are also available for one-on-one research help with your students.

    To ensure a successful class we ask that:

    • The information literacy session be in support of an assignment. Please send us the assignment and a list of topics the students may be researching when scheduling the session.
    • The students have at least broad topic ideas. It is helpful if a list of the student's topics, or possible topics, is sent to us in advance. 
    • The students are allowed time at the end of the session to apply the skills the librarian taught. It is helpful if the students are required to leave the session with at least one approved source.
    • The teacher be present for the class, help with classroom management, and participate.
    • The skills taught during the library session are reinforced in the classroom and on the assignment.

  • The Library Computer Lab can be reserved via Outlook email. A Library staff member will review your request and reply with an approval or contact you with an explanation and an offer of alternative arrangements.

    Class drop-in visits are welcome, but to ensure adequate space and support, advance notice is much appreciated.

    The Group Study and Individual Study Rooms are only available for reservation by students (with the exception of ITS, which may reserve the basement Group Study Room as needed).

  • Landmark College faculty and staff are invited to borrow Library materials directly from participating academic libraries from Vermont colleges and universities participating in this reciprocal program. 

    The Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries sponsors the program, and provides a list of participating libraries and their circulation policies for reciprocal borrowers. Some restrictions may apply for the types of materials eligible for reciprocal borrowing or for the length of the borrowing period, as per the circulation policies.

    With a VCAL Library Card, you can visit most college and university libraries throughout Vermont and borrow their materials then and there instead of waiting for interlibrary loan. Afterwards you may return the other library materials to the Landmark College Library before they are due, and we'll take care of the rest for you.

    Come to the Library front desk to apply for a VCAL borrowing card. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have, but you can also consult the VCAL Faculty Borrowing page.
