Election 2020 and the Fantasy of a White Christian America

Dr. Miller’s talk will discuss the nature of contemporary American Christian nationalism, the social and cultural forces that feed it, and why the 2020 presidential election represents a struggle to define American identity.

Bio: Daniel Miller, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Religion and Social Thought and Chair of the Department of Liberal Studies at Landmark College in Putney, VT. He researches and teaches in the areas of religion and secularism, political theory, cultural studies, and queer studies. His first book, the Myth of Normative Secularism: Religion and Politics in the Democratic Homeworld, was published by Duquesne University Press in 2016, and he is currently completing his second book, Queer Democracy: Desire, Dysphoria, and the Body Politic. He regularly presents at professional academic conferences and has published articles in such peer-reviewed journals as Constellations, Soundings, Theory and Method in the Study of Religion, Political Theology, and The International Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Society. He is also the co-host of the podcast Straight White American Jesus, which explores the intersections of politics, culture, and religion in the US and currently receives over 30k downloads per month.
