Weekend in Berlin
On Thursday evening, we went to Markthalle 9, a 125 year-old market building recently restored that holds a "Streetfood Thursday" event, which brings in chefs from around Berlin to create food at streetfood prices. On Friday students turned in their first major project assignment, and then we headed out to the Turkish Market, that runs for over a mile on both sides of a canal in Kreuzberg. Yesterday, on Saturday, many students learned how to operate the complex workings of the dorm washing machines, and explored further. In the afternoon, we went to visit the Eastside Gallery, which is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, and famous for artists using it to create works. In the evening many of us watched the nail-biting world cup match between Germany and Sweden, and shared in the elation of many students on campus watching with us when Germany scored a goal in the last 5 minutes of the game to win! Today, Sunday, we are heading about an hour out of the city to see a medieval town and fortress in Alt Standau. With their weekly tranportation passes that allow them to go on any system, students are starting to feel more confident about exploring on their own, and have been having some fun adventures. The group is functioning really well together, and are open to trying new things. I am going to put a bunch of pictures below for you to see some of what I outlined above.
