Looking for rhinos

Today on August 5th we looked for rhinos as part of Erik’s attempt  to tag and indentify the juveniles. Of course as our recent run of luck would have it, we did not find any, even though we set out alfalfa (a delicacy) for them. We waited for 3 whole hours for them in the cramped jeeps and nothing. This was humiliating as we saw 7 on the first day in the Orapa game park and more on the second. To add insult to injury when we were heading out we saw 3 rhino’s together. I swear they’re taunting us. However, we had a nice braii (a barbecue) with Batswana sausages. We also saw a hyena; the first for this trip so the day was not a total loss.

Today, we visited Kubu Island, which is a little rocky island in the middle of a desert salt pan. It may look lifeless and uninhabited, but once you explore through it you will be surprised! Skink lizards crawl along the hot rocks, while pied crows perch atop trees guarding their nest with no fear of natural predators around. There are also rock walls and a hidden sacred cave where offerings are still being made by people like me to this day, left there by the people who called this rock pile in the middle of nowhere, whose desert like surroundings make it look like it’s from another planet, home. Later, we set off to find and try to dart a white rhino and her calf for the second straight day to no avail, but there is always tomorrow!

Note: We are having some technical difficulties with computers and internet, so we re uploading when we are able. Photos will follow ASAP. Each photo takes a long time to upload. Students are all engaged and busy. We have much to write about which I will catch readers up on in the next post. Till then..... Debbie Hayward
