Cooking at R2R Farm

After buying a bunch of food on Sunday, we broke into two teams, and the first team cooked us a good old American dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs with coleslaw on Sunday night. Here are some pictures:

On Monday they participated in a farm-to-table culinary workshop with Andy, the chef here. They did some preserving first of some of the farm’s excess crops: salt-curing sour oranges, pickling cucumbers, and making sauerkraut from green papayas. They then chopped a bunch of veggies for our dinner.

Ethan N:

Yesterday started off with a reflection project. As we enjoyed our breakfast, we wrote essays reflecting on our experiences not having access to our phones for almost a week. After we finished our reflections, we sat down to lunch and then scattered for unstructured time. Our task for that period of time was to find some way to experience solitude for a few minutes. I personally chose to spend that time sunbathing by the pond and watching the insects go about their day. After that we gathered in the community center to learn a little bit about cooking. We sliced vegetables and preserved them in jars. We made papaya sauerkraut, pickles, and salt-cured sour oranges. After that we sliced vegetables for some vegetables and rice. Having sat down for dinner, we retreated to the cabanas and talked until bedtime.

The day started off with me waking up early to get some homework out of the way before class which was not a problem. Then it was time for class which I went above and beyond the call of duty when we were told to talk about one thing we found in the article. I talked about 2 things because I went first and then towards the end nobody had talked about the other thing I had highlighted so that was pretty sick. After class we had to write two papers and read some stuff which I finished pretty quickly than I did the most exciting thing you can do. That’s right I folded my laundry and organized my things. I know super insane right.

Later that day we had a lesson from the chef on Ridge to Reef. We learned how to preserve oranges, green papayas, and cucumbers. It was a pretty great experience to learn how to preserve. Then it was time for dinner which I may have forget I was on dish cleaning, so my dinner team was kind of annoyed. After all was said and done some people and I hung out and just chatted and that’s how I ended off my night.
