Natural History

Lifespan—

over 800 years!

General description—

This long lasting tree can withstand many conditions. They are facing some decline due to being easily overpowered by invasive species. Its bark was used a lot for tannin used in the Catskills before the turn of the century.

Natural distribution and habitat—

Native to North America including the east coast and Midwest. (usually found in the Appalachian mountains)

Conservation status—

the demand for the bark has declined due to environmental concerns.

Uses—

Used in tannin industries during colonial times.
