At Landmark College, we believe Study Abroad is one of the most rewarding and life-changing experiences students can have during their college years. An emphasis on safety is a critical aspect of ensuring that the programs can be successful in their educational goals. In these uncertain times, we want to share with you information regarding the preparations we take to make Landmark College's Study Abroad programs as safe as they can be.
Thoughtful planning, professional leadership, solid preparation, and contingency planning ensure that our Study Abroad programs are a safe and fun learning experience. Please be assured we will continue to make safety the top priority in all of our Study Abroad programs.
Each student is provided with an International Student ID Card that provides basic travel insurance (see detailed description of coverage). The policy includes:
- Emergency Medical Transportation—including evacuation if needed
- Baggage and Travel Delay
- Sickness and Hospital Benefits
- Accidental Death, Dismemberment, and Repatriation of Remains
In addition, each student is covered by their Landmark College policy and/or their family policy.
Each Landmark College Study Abroad program is staffed with experienced leaders who have extensive experience working with students with learning differences. Typically, Program Directors, who are primarily responsible for coordinating in-country logistics and activities, have experience living and working in the host country. Academic Directors, who are responsible for the academic integrity of the course(s), are members of the Landmark faculty with expertise in the appropriate field of study. The Program Director and the Academic Director work together to provide students with in-depth, one-on-one support for academic, cultural, and student-life issues.
Communication is important for the safety and effectiveness of our programs. Study Abroad directors provide updates to our staff in Putney, Vermont. Our staff check multiple sources of information pertaining to program safety, including government and news media websites. We encourage students to contact their parents as soon as they arrive in the host country, and as needed during the trip. Directors have cell phone access. When possible and appropriate, Directors use Skype in order to maintain accessibility to students and the Landmark College Office of International Education.
The Office of International Education remains in contact with Directors during each trip and serves as the primary contact for all information related to its programs.
The Student Handbook, which is given to the students during Orientation and posted on-line for families, provides essential information such flight schedules and travel itineraries, emergency phone numbers, and contact information for the trip. This comprehensive handbook contains all the information listed above as well as:
- Lists of things to do to prepare for the trip, what to bring, and what not to bring
- Recommended articles, books, and websites for information about the country and region where the program will take place
- The syllabus for the course, a program description, and a program itinerary
- Guidelines and information about money, housing, meals, and other expenses and means of communication
- How to get help for academics and other problems or difficulties
We realize that students occasionally make short-term, individual travel plans during a program. If so, they are required to provide their itinerary and contact information for the place(s) they will be staying to the Program Director. We strongly recommend that students also inform their families of any individual plans.
During orientation meetings in the weeks prior to departure, Directors carefully review such topics as local customs, health and travel tips, guidelines for appropriate behavior and dress, as well as laws and policies related to alcohol/drug use. They also provide participants with specific safety guidelines to follow, including who to contact in an emergency.
