Program Overview

This course focuses on the relationship between communication and culture. Students explore the ways in which cultural values, attitudes and assumptions are reflected in the communication process.

The first half of the course will be taught on Landmark College's Putney, VT campus, and the group will travel to Quebec, Canada for the second half of the course. The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • Sunday, July 6, 2025: Student arrival on campus for the Summer II term
  • Monday, July 7, 2025: Course begins on the Putney campus
  • Wednesday, July 16, 2025: Group departure via Landmark van for Quebec – the group will stay in Quebec City with an overnight excursion during the weekend of July 19-20 to a smaller city such as Saguenay
  • Friday, July 25, 2025: Group return to campus; course ends
  • Saturday, July 26, 2025: Student departure from campus

Course description

The course begins with a self-analysis of the students’ own cultural identities and communication styles. Students then examine verbal and nonverbal communication patterns from a cross-cultural perspective. The students explore intercultural communication in the context of Quebec, including an exploration of the province’s unique history and blend of traditional First Nations, French, and English culture, and how modern perspectives on multiculturalism

Housing, Meals, Transportation, and Program Activities

The Quebec program group will use a Landmark van for transport to Quebec. The trip is about 5 hours, but the journey will be broken up by a visit to the Haskell Free Library on the border of the U.S. and Canada. Depending on the size of the group, the van might be full with no spare seats.

In Quebec, daily transport to program activities may be on foot, via Landmark van, or using public transportation.

Housing in Quebec City will be in shared dormitory accommodations at Université Laval, the largest university in Quebec province. Students will be housed two per room. Rooms include a small fridge, and the residence hall has a vast kitchen facility available for students who want to cook their own meals. Restaurants and a grocery store are within walking distance, and the university has a restaurant and small convenience store.

During the overnight excursion, the group will stay at a hotel.

Program activities include a tour of historic Old Quebec, visits to local organizations, markets, historic and cultural sites, and activities focused on learning about cultural communities within Quebec, such as First Nations (indigenous) populations or immigrant groups.

Québec Study Abroad Program Details & FAQs

Free time/Independence: variable. While on campus, free time will be similar to any other campus course - this program takes place during the second summer session on campus. While in Québec, the group will have structured activities each day but most days will include some free time.

Physical Demands: moderate. In Québec, the program will include some walking around the city, standing in museums or other locations, and possibly some walking or light hiking on excursions outside the city.

Transitions: low to moderate. The group will travel together to Québec, and will establish their housing at Université Laval. These rooms will be kept for the duration of the period in Canada, so when the group goes on excursion they will not need to repack their suitcases.

Stimuli: low to moderate. Québec is a small city and will therefore have pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Université Laval is just outside the city center on a broad and wooded campus with plenty of quiet space.

This is a 3-credit, 2000-level course and requires the following prerequisites:

  • Good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or above)
  • WRT1011 and
  • EDU1011 or EDU1001 and
  • One 1000-level Communications course

Cost of this program includes:

Student spending can vary depending on the individual. Additional costs include:

  • Most meals
  • Free time activities
  • Cell phone costs, if students plan to activate a roaming plan or purchase a local SIM card
  • Laundry (machines are available at the Université Laval)
  • Souvenirs, gifts, etc.

Landmark College’s “Global Engagement” Scholarship offers a scholarship of up to 50% of the program fee. Scholarships are need-based and in general there are 1 – 2 scholarships available per program.
