Landmark STARS Student Leadership Corps

National Science FoundationFrom 2006 - 2009, Landmark College participated in the NSF-funded STARS (Students and Technology in Academia, Research and Service) Alliance. The Alliance includes more than twenty colleges and universities, including: UNC Charlotte, NC State, Georgia Tech, Florida State University, Florida A&M University, University of South Florida-Lakeland, Auburn University, Spelman College, and Meredith College.

Students who participated in the STARS program at Landmark College were part of a Student Leadership Corps, which provided opportunities to:

  • Learn about computer careers
  • Work with mentors
  • Build their resume
  • Get research experience
  • Network with undergrads, graduate students and professors at other colleges

Reach for the Stars Summer Conference

Each year, participants in the STARS SLC attended an academic conference on innovations and careers in technology, the STARS Celebration. They met with peers from other STARS Alliance schools, as well as with faculty, professionals and graduate students. The conference includes an introduction to mentoring, leadership skills, research experiences, professional development and civic engagement.

Project

Each student in the STARS SLC worked with staff to create a project based on their particular interests. Landmark College SLC projects involved research, community outreach, and web design.

Spring 2008 Project: Breaking Through Invisible Barriers to Successful Learning

In Spring 2008, the STARS students created an outreach piece encourageing younger students with learning disabilities to be confident about college success. This project gave them experience with web project planning and programming techniques using Adobe Flash. Check out the Breaking Through project >>

Current Opportunities

Although our participation in the STARS Alliance has ended, the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training often has opportunities for students to assist in research projects, such as assisting in facilitation of web usability studies.
