HU2611: Ancient and Modern Greek Culture

Pre-Requisites: HU 1000-level course, and EN 1011 or 1051. Students in all Study Abroad programs must also be in “good standing”(i.e. not on academic or social probation).
Course Description

We begin with two weeks in Nauplion, a beautiful town on the Pelponnesus. From there we take a number of day trips to such sites as Argos, Olympia, Corinth, and the islands of Hydra and Spetses. During the final week, we move to Athens, and explore the wonders of the ancient city, including the Acropolis, the Agora and the Theatre of Dionysus.
Program Overview
This course introduces students to the origins and development of Greek culture from its Minoan roots through the flowering of Classical Greece to the world views of some modern literary figures. Students investigate the history and conventions of ancient Greek theatre, studying and performing a selection of works by Aeschylus and Euripides. The also examine the impact of classical Greek culture on modern Greece by reading twentieth-century poets, historians and novelists.
Cost:
$6000. All housing and transportation, (including round-trip flights from Boston and ground transportation), are included.
Combined cost of Greece and Ireland programs $11,000.
