In the spring semester, 2011, I was granted sabbatical leave. My research topic, "Maps and a Sense of Wonder in a Digitally Networked World" pursued the hypothesis that “Our seeming abandonment of “hands-on” map reading and map making skills, and our growing reliance upon digital-based networks of navigation - in contrast to finding our way based on information obtained through close observation and actual, studied experience - may, in fact, be contributing to a significant diminishment of “placed awareness” in our culture. The project's intent was to: 1. Explore whether we may be losing our capacity for experiencing profound wonderment when encountering real landscapes, new or familiar. 2. Investigate whether we may be in danger of reducing navigational “discovery” to merely expedient, instantaneous and increasingly virtual procedures. 3. Examine the possible consequences of our society’s wholesale adoption of digital way-finding - which, among other things, may be leading us to focus exclusively on destinations and rendering us numb to journeys themselves. |
