by Solvegi Shmulsky

PUTNEY, Vt.--On October 14, 2014, Ellen D. Smith of Brattleboro, Vt., will join Landmark College as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the chief officer in charge of growing the organization via fundraising efforts. Landmark College is a not-for-profit institution that delivers two- and four-year degree programs for students who learn differently and is constructing a new state-of-the-art building, the Nicole Goodner MacFarlane Science, Technology & Innovation Center. Smith and the Office of Institutional Advancement will lead the last stage of the capital campaign for the new building.

Smith has 15 years in the field of institutional advancement, most recently at the local Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH), where she led the development division as an executive director and director. While at BMH, Smith launched and successfully completed two capital campaigns and exceeded the Hospital’s Annual Fund goals. A recent example of the creative work in Smith's division is Join Us Give Now, the snappy music video featuring local health care professionals dancing at BMH. This video was a collaborative effort which earned a NESHCo award for excellence in marketing in May 2014.

In addition to her role at BMH, Smith is an adjunct faculty member at the School for International Training (SIT) and serves community organizations including Holton Home, Morningside Shelter, and the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary. Before her career in institutional development, Smith served as a guidance counselor and psychotherapist working with adolescents and adults in Keene, N.H. Smith holds an M.A. in counseling psychology from Antioch University New England in Keene, and a B.A. in psychology from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Oh.

Landmark College President Dr. Peter Eden explained that Smith brings a wealth of expertise in fund raising, marketing, and working within a collaborative framework. He said, “Smith understands how to connect with our present and future supporters—both here on campus and out in the world. She brings skills and experience to advance the College, ensuring that it will be strong for many future generations of learners.”

Landmark College was the first institution of higher learning to pioneer college-level studies for students with dyslexia. Today, Landmark College is a global leader in integrated teaching methods for students with learning disabilities (including dyslexia), ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The College offers two- and four-year degree options, a graduate-level certificate in universal design with technology integration, and summer programs for students who learn differently. Students, faculty, and professionals from around the world are drawn to Landmark College for its innovative educational model, designed through research and practice to help all students become confident, empowered, and independently successful learners.
