Groves Academy Summer Institute 2010

The Landmark College Institute for Research and Training offered a series of workshops in collaboration with Groves Academy in St. Louis Park, MN.
The workshops provided:

  • In-depth review of the latest research and theories
  • Opportunities to practice implementing workshop concepts

Audience: Teachers of grades 4 – 12, Special Education Teachers of all levels.

Workshop Descriptions

Wilson Introductory Workshop/Applied Methods. This Wilson Introductory Workshop is a 15-hour workshop that provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the Wilson Reading System (WRS). This 3-day workshop presents multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the WRS program. It provides hands-on and practical training to teachers implementing the WRS, and it fulfills the prerequisite for the Level I certification program. Participants may receive 1 graduate credit from Endicott College.
August 16 - 18

Assistive Technology for Struggling Students. For educators and developers of educational materials, this digitally-connected world opens up endless new ways to explore how to use instructional content. This one day workshop will introduce a variety of beneficial assistive technologies, information on how to access the pedagogy, accessibility, and usability of new technology tools. The goal of this course is to provide educators with technology and tools that can promote access and learning to effectively reach students, especially those with LD/ADHD.
August 19

Teaching Students with AD/HD and Executive Function Challenges. The workshop explores the theoretical basis for AD/HD and executive function challenges at school and home, providing educators with insights for designing effective interventions that promote academic success. Participants will develop qa repertory of strategies for meeting the challenges of time and task management, with a focus on efficient study routines and a coaching approach to student metacognition and self management.

Ellen Engstrom

Ellen Engstrom, M.A., Lead Education Specialist

An Associate Professor, Ms. Engstrom has been on the faculty since January, 1999. She is an associate of the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training. Before joining Landmark College, she was the Department Head of the Lower/Middle School at Groves Academy in Minneapolis, an independent K-12 day school for students with learning and attentional difficulties. Ms. Engstrom holds an M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from Wellesley College. She has a long-standing interest in language and reading disorders, as well as the assistive technologies that support students with reading difficulties. Trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction, Ms. Engstrom holds a Level I certificate in the Wilson Reading System. She is a Lead Education Specialist at the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training.
