The Groves Academy Summer Institute offered the following workshops: Wilson Introductory Workshop/Applied Methods, Improving Reading Comprehension for Struggling Students, and Teaching Writing to Struggling Students.
The workshops provided:

- Opportunities to practice implementing workshop concepts

Workshop Descriptions
Wilson Introductory Workshop/Applied Methods – This 15-hour workshop, 3-day Wilson Introductory workshop provided the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the Wilson Reading System (WRS). The workshop presented multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the WRS program. It provided hands-on and practical training to teachers implementing the WRS, and it fulfills the prerequisite for the Level I certification program. Participants were eligible to receive 1 graduate credit from Endicott College.
Improving Reading Comprehension for Struggling Students. This workshop reviewed the latest research in reading comprehension. Participants received examples of effective strategies that promote reading comprehension in core content areas, within a framework for effective instructional design. The workshop is designed for general education instructors as well as those who work with students with learning differences. Participants were encouraged to bring currently used texts and reading assignments on which to build lessons and activities. CEUs were available from Groves Academy.
Teaching Writing to Struggling Students. This workshop addressed academic writing as a complex and challenging cognitive task that places great demands on student language skills, attention, memory, and effort. Participants reviewed challenges of teaching academic writing and best practices for teaching writing to students with learning disabilities or attention disorders. Technologies that support the writing process were also reviewed. CEUs were available from Groves Academy.
Instructor: Ellen Enstrom, M.A.
 Ellen Engstrom, M.A., Lead Education Specialist An Associate Professor, Ms. Engstrom has been on the faculty since January, 1999. She is an associate of the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training. Before joining Landmark College, she was the Department Head of the Lower/Middle School at Groves Academy in Minneapolis, an independent K-12 day school for students with learning and attentional difficulties. Ms. Engstrom holds an M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from Wellesley College. She has a long-standing interest in language and reading disorders, as well as the assistive technologies that support students with reading difficulties. Trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction, Ms. Engstrom holds a Level I certificate in the Wilson Reading System. She is a Lead Education Specialist at the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training.
