Supplemental Readings

I want to use principles of Universal Design more extensively in the delivery of my course, but I don’t know how to digitize my handouts easily and effectively. What are my options?

“Digitize” with Word:

If you have already created the handout (readings, quizzes, assignments) in Microsoft Word, it is a simple and straightforward process to share this digital copy with your students. Just log into the College network, open the document, and do a Save As to your course’s folder on the Shared S drive folder. You and your students already have access rights to this folder. Simply ask students to first open Kurzweil and then open the Word document in the shared folder. Kurzweil has no difficulties reading most Word fonts.

Link to online readings:

If the reading is online, you can type or copy the URL onto a Word doc, title it, and then save the doc (even if it only contains the URL or link) in your class’s shared folder; then the students will need only to open the doc and click on the URL, rather than having to type the lengthy cumbersome URL. Students who have had Kurzweil training with Kathy Burris know to use Mozilla Firefox rather than Internet Explorer for reading text online with Kurzweil.

Need help finding readings online?

The Library staff is happy to assist you in locating specific titles online. Librarians can also assist you in finding online readings on a given topic. The Library’s article databases contain thousands of full-text journal, magazine, and newspaper titles; they’re an abundant source of digital texts.

Seek Candace’s help:

If you have only a hard copy of the reading, you can give it to me, Candace Brown, x6448.   I will scan it, convert it to a Kurzweil format, and then save it to your class’s shared folder on the S drive.
