March 2010: LCIRT Work with Community Colleges Featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education

The March 7th article in the Chronicle of Higher Education discusses Landmark College's Access to Technological Education Programs and Careers, quoting Vice President for Research and Institute Operations, Steve Fadden: "Students with learning disabilities have hidden problem-solving strengths. They live in a world that does not often conform to their learning style, constantly presenting challenges that require solutions. Instructors, he says, need to know how to tap into those strengths."

August 2009: LCIRT Awarded National Science Foundation Grant

The Landmark College Institute for Research and Training (LCIRT) was awarded a $149,994 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant program for a two-year project entitled Improving Access to Technological Education Programs and Careers for Community College Students with Learning Disabilities (LD). Ongoing grant funded projects

steve presentsThe Supporting Effective Literacy Education for Content Teachers (SELECT) project, funded by the Vermont Department of Education has been opened up to teachers outside of Vermont.

Department of Education's Demonstration Projects to Ensure Students with Disabilities Receive a Quality Higher Education (Demo Disabilities) grant program content has been opened up to all community colleges. Through the grant 18 Online Best Practices Modules were developed for our partner community colleges.

STARS Alliance Student Leadership Corps working to broaden participation in computing careers.

Universal Usability Lab continues to facilitate LCIRT research and consulting services.

November 2008

World Usability Day New England, 2008
For the fourth consecutive year, Dartmouth College and Landmark College jointly organized World Usability Day New England (WUDNE). The theme for the day was "Universal usability to enhance learning, effectiveness, and understanding across people of all abilities." The keynote speaker was Peter Morville, pioneer of the field of Information Architecture.

Expanding Horizons: 2008 Institute on Learning Disabilities
A stellar team from LCIRT and Landmark College were the primary presenters at the first annual Expanding Horizons: 2008 Institute on Learning Disabilities conference sponsored by the Lone Star College System (formally North Harris Montgomery Community College District  in Houston, Texas.  The conference represented a successful collaboration between NHMCCD (a partner on our Demo Disabilities grant), the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), and LCIRT.

September 2007

LCIRT is awarded a National Science Foundation grant – Universal Design for Algebra
The purpose of the grant is: "to study on-line learning resources that support algebra students in order to determine which features prevent struggling students from benefiting from the learning resources; to redesign the learning resources and make them accessible to struggling students; and to test the effectiveness of the redesigned learning resources."  In addition to Landmark College, LCIRT (Landmark College Institute for Research and Training) has three partners where this research is occurring:  Suffolk Community College on Long Island, New York; Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts; and Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

May 2007

Consulting in the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia
Prince Sultan University (PSU) in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has retained Landmark College to assist in the conceptualization, design, and implementation of an Academic Assistance Unit (AAU) for students with learning disabilities. Steve Fadden, Director of LCIRT, and Kelly Fadden, Director of Grants and Sponsored Projects, traveled to Riyadh to conduct an organizational assessment at PSU.

Dr Christian Jernstedt visits Landmark, co-sponsored by LCIRT and the Southeast Vermont Community Learning Collaborative.
Dr. Christian Jernstedt, Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Dartmouth College provided a provocative and informative full day presentation on The Neurological and Cognitive Foundations of Learning for Landmark faculty, staff and community.
