Coaching Students with ADHD: Level I

Cost: $500

College students with AD/HD can be at-risk for failure due to difficulties with self-management, organization, self-motivation and related challenges. This hands-on course offers a flexible and systematic approach to AD/HD Coaching that especially targets professionals working with students at the postsecondary level. Secondary school educators working one-on-one or in specialized settings will also benefit. This course introduces coaching theory and practice and prepares participants to explore informal coaching opportunities in their current work settings. Completion of this course does not qualify or certify participants as professional coaches.

Technology Solutions for Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD*

Cost: $500
Optional Graduate Credits: 2 (add $270)
Dates: June 23-25, 2008

The goal of this course is to provide educators with the necessary tools to use assistive technology strategies to support students with learning and attention difficulties in their reading, writing, and study skills.
Technologies explored include:

  • Text-to-speech
  • Voice recognition
  • Graphic organizer software
  • Specialized features of MS Word, such as reviewing toolbar

The focus is on integrating assistive technology with effective learning strategies.

*Students in this course should have some background and practice in personal computing in a Windows™ environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Word™ and file management is essential.

 

Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Cost: $500

Dates: June 25 - 27, 2008

This workshop explores the many ways to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Participants will focus primarily on designing appropriate learning environments that support academic and social progress of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Sensory integration, auditory and visual processing, pragmatic language and self-advocacy form the core of the curriculum.  This course is designed with the adult learner in mind and will feature multi-modal learning activities throughout the three days.

 

Math Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD

Cost: $500

Dates: June 30 - July 2, 2008

This course for secondary and postsecondary educators begins with an overview of the difficulties inherent in the teaching of mathematics to students with learning disabilities and/or AD/HD. Participants will learn a theoretical basis for developing best practices and how to target instruction appropriately according to students' individual needs. This course will focus on specific strategies that instructors can use to improve students' ability to understand math and ways in which students can modify how they approach math courses for better success.

 

Designing Accessible Educational Content

Cost: $500

Dates: July 7 - 9, 2008

This class takes an in-depth, hands-on and practical approach to understanding and developing educational materials that are designed to accommodate a wide range of learners. Educators will develop strategies for creating materials that adhere to the standards of ADA, universal design and online accessibility principles and explore new ways to present instructional content that is more engaging and easily digestible.

Class participants might include educators instructing all ages, administrators, disability services staff, technology services staff, instructional, web and graphic designers, corporate trainers and educational service providers.

 

Wilson Fundations Workshops

Cost: $195 per level

Level 3 -  July 11, 2008

These workshops provide a practical “how-to” overview of the Wilson Fundations program for grades K-3. They focus on the knowledge and skills required to begin implementing the program in the classroom.  All workshops orient participants to the principles of Fundations instruction and how to use the Fundations materials.

In the workshops, participants will:

  • Understand Fundations principles of instruction, the appropriate student population and the implementation of models used
  • Review how Fundations materials facilitate multisensory, interactive learning
  • Plan a Fundations lesson and set up a weekly schedule for a unit
  • Optimize the use of the teacher’s manual and interactive CD
  • Practice lesson procedures and activities, reviewing unit structure and materials

 

Teaching Writing to Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD

Cost: $500

Dates: July 14 - 16, 2008

Writing is one of the most challenging academic tasks for students at risk. This course explores methods and strategies for teaching writing to struggling secondary and post-secondary students, especially those with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. The course will present research validated best practices for teaching writing to students who struggle. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of strategies for teaching writing as a process within the context of a universally designed classroom.

 

Wilson Introductory Workshop/Applied Methods

Cost: $395
Optional Graduate Credits: 1 ($150)
Dates: July 16 - 19, 2008

The Wilson Introductory Workshop: Applications is a 15-hour workshop that provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the Wilson Reading System in an Intervention Model Setting. The Intervention Model targets students beyond grade 3 who are reading or spelling below grade level. It is implemented in small groups and reading classes in the general education classroom, after-school programs, literacy and adult education
settings. The workshop introduces the general program concepts and provides instruction in the lesson plan format targeted for a group setting. This 3-day workshop presents multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the WRS program. It provides hands-on and practical training to teachers implementing the WRS. The Introductory Workshop: Applications fulfills the prerequisite requirement for all other WRS professional development required to join Wilson Academy. Teaching Reading & Study Skills to Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD

Dates: July 21 -23, 2008

Students at risk for academic failure can thrive when they develop effective routines and strategies for understanding and remembering information. This course offers methods for creating a successful reading and study skills program for high school and college students. Topics include a thorough grounding in Landmark College's Master Notebook system for taking and revising notes, note-taking subskills such as paraphrasing and summarizing, Active Reading strategies, and strategies for test preparation and test taking.

 

Transitions: Making the First Year in College a Success for Students with Learning Disabilities andor ADHD

Cost: $500

Dates: July 23 - 25, 2008

Transition to college is widely accepted as a key developmental task in our society.  Education beyond the secondary level is crucial for achieving career success and economic independence.  Yet students who transition poorly from high school to college are less likely to persist and earn college degrees.  This workshop presents the best practices for working with students in their first year of college, with an emphasis on those students with learning disabilities or ADHD.  Participants will engage in lesson-building that creates relevance, connectedness, and the strategic development of skills in the classroom.

 

Effective Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD

In this age of high stakes testing, educators are increasingly concerned about the achievement levels of students at-risk, including those with learning disabilities and AD/HD. This intensive course is designed for educators wishing to improve the effectiveness of their teaching in ways that will benefit all students, while providing critical support to those who struggle.
