Primary Goals: To read widely from the body of contemporary UK environmental literature & practice writing techniques nature writers employ in their craft. To walk on the land - for this is where one will find the heart of one’s own nature writing voice.

  • Learn through “close observation” & and hands-on discovery “in-the-field”
  • Hike & paddle in beautiful natural areas of Scotland, Wales & England
  • Enjoy guided natural history walks as well as time for reflective journaling & independent rambling
  • Excellent background course for students interested in environmental studies

Special Considerations

  • The majority of this course will be spent out-of-doors & in semi-remote locations
  • Physical fitness is important - outdoor activities will include day-hikes (some will be long & moderately strenuous), canoeing or kayaking
  • Travel days may be tedious & exhausting - lugging around bags, dealing with crowded conditions, making connections, etc.
  • In Wales, meal preparation & clean-up will be shared by all; a spirit of cooperation & flexibility is essential
  • It is likely that there will be no connectivity for computers/cell phones for most of the program
  • Writing expectations for this course are high - some writing will take place outdoors in adverse weather & will be done by hand in hardcopy journals; other writing will be done on laptops indoors
  • There is NO SMOKING in the field
