Samuel Rowlett holds a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pacific Northwest College of Art.  He has received fellowships from Yale University School of Art and the Vermont Studio Center, and recently was artist in residency at MASS MoCA's Kidspace.  Samuel has exhibited widely with solo exhibitions at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, New York and Real Art Ways in Hartford, Connecticut.  While trained as a painter, Samuel often filters sculpture, performance, video, and photography through the language and materiality of painting and drawing.  His current research explores concepts of landscape painting and examines the relationships between studio practice, community engagement, and environmental exploration.  Samuel’s work has been reviewed in The Boston Globe, The Valley Advocate, Big, Red & Shiny, the Daily Hampshire Gazette, and The Hartford Courant; his work has been spotlighted on WNPR –Connecticut Public Radio and included in The New York Times.  He has lectured as a visiting artist and guest critic at Amherst College, Green Mountain College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and Franklin Pierce University among other institutions.  Since 2005 Samuel has taught drawing at the Vermont Governor’s Institute on the Arts.  Born in Leicester, England and raised in Vermont, Samuel currently lives with his family in Western Massachusetts.
